Active Ingredients: Clemastine hydrofumarat
Therapeutic actions: Clemastine, an antihistamine, is used to relieve hay fever and allergy symptoms, including itchy skin; hives; sneezing; runny nose; and red, itchy, tearing eyes. This medication is sometimes prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Indications: Clemastine is indicated for use in treating allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, rhinorrhea, pruritus and lacrimation.
Contraindications and cautions: Before taking clemastine,
tell your doctor and pharmacist if you are allergic to clemastine or any other drugs.
tell your doctor and pharmacist what prescription and nonprescription medications you are taking, especially other medications for colds, hay fever, or allergies; medications for depression or seizures; muscle relaxants; narcotics (pain medications); sedatives; sleeping pills; tranquilizers; and vitamins. Do not take clemastine if you have taken an MAO inhibitor [phenelzine (Nardil) or tranylcypromine (Parnate)] in the last two weeks.
tell your doctor if you have or have ever had asthma or lung disease, diabetes, glaucoma, ulcers, difficulty urinating (due to an enlarged prostate gland), heart disease, high blood pressure, seizures, or an overactive thyroid gland.
tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking clemastine, call your doctor.
if you are having surgery, including dental surgery, tell the doctor or dentist that you are taking clemastine.
you should know that this drug may make you drowsy. Do not drive a car or operate machinery until you know how this drug affects you.
remember that alcohol can add to the drowsiness caused by this drug.
Adverse effects: Clemastine may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away:
drowsiness
dry mouth, nose, and throat
dizziness
upset stomach
chest congestion
headache
If you experience any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
dry mouth
excitement (especially in children)
nervousness
enlargement of pupils in the eye
increased sensitivity to sunlight
Interactions: Clemastin causes additive anticholinergic action during joint application with tricyclic antidepressive means, the phenothiazines and other neuroleptics, antiparkinsonian means and glutetemid;- strengthens the depressive action of barbiturates and benzodizeoins on the central nervous system;- strengthens depressive action on the central nervous system up to the disorder of respiration;- strengthening the depressive action of ethyl alcohol on the central nervous system;- inhibiters of MAO strengthen the anticholinergic effect of clemastin.
